Ignorance is bliss, until it isn't.
Most of my life I was apolitical. In my 20's and 30's, my priorities were staying tan, controlling my weight and getting laid. My 40's were mostly about getting more deeply acquainted with myself, getting my ship in the water professionally and carving out a living for myself.
I was always registered as a Democrat, but never listened to the news or researched candidates running for office, and couldn't care less about politics. It was a world outside of my sphere of interest or concern.
I'm ashamed to admit this, but I didn't develop any sense of political responsibility until I entered my senior years~ and then only during the Trump era, did I start paying attention to what was nationally and globally important. I'm chalking this up to the acquisition of greater personal development and wisdom.
Before I altered my political preference and registered as a Republican, 'cause I wanted to stop getting REAMS of pre-election materials in the mail from the Dem party, I simply voted for those I was instructed to vote for. I was delighted I didn't have to decide WHO would get my vote! The decisions were made FOR me, and I could assure myself I was a "good citizen," because I followed the Dem's suggestions, and voted (by mail).
My choices were made very clear in those mass mailings that I and billions of others received from the donkey party. What a hassle it was, to delete my name and address from a 15" - 20" high stack of paper the Dem's had sent out~ but it was a small price to pay for not having to research and decide on the healthiest or best candidates.
At some point though, I had to wonder: Who's PAYING for all this shit to go out en-mass?? These pre-election materials going to every registered Democrat in the nation must be costing a bloody fortune! What's their agenda, their motivation or angle? Why are they apparently trying so hard to influence who gets elected?!
I think most people are politically apathetic like I used to be. "Save me the hassle of making a decision, and I'm happy"~but all these years later, I'm seeing more clearly exactly how the crazies that have been running what was once America, got themselves into such a powerful position. They literally BOMBARD you with mail that makes it easy to mark your mail-in ballot, and be done with it. "There, I'm a solid citizen, 'cause I voted (never-mind, I hadn't a fucking clue what those candidates stood for, or how their policies would harm me for years to come)!
The Republican party will never send you tons of shit in the mail pre-election to influence your vote. They expect you to be intelligent and wise enough to do your research, and determine who might best serve your country, your neighbors and yourself. That sounds pretty darned rational, doesn't it??
Ah, but is it an effective strategy in light of all the lazy, politically apathetic folks out there, who just want someone else to make their life and decision-making a little easier?? Probably not.
