Living in the Wild, and Rescuing Critters
How a maimed squirrel set up camp in my dining room.
I rescued a squirrel from death today. Had I not gone to the back of my yard to water a newly planted Camelia bush, I'd have never discovered him. Looked down, and he was against my fence right under my hose. Poor little thing was screaming for help. Flies were eating him alive. I think my alpha cat, Greyson had caught and maimed him. Such a precious little soul. So traumatized, it breaks my heart!
I used warm saltwater compresses on its wounds, he went limp in my hand and trusted me completely, as I pet him and continued to speak soothingly. Set up a cat carrier with a towel and bowl of water inside. He's changed positions a couple of times this evening, but is sleeping deep. Best thing for healing.
I’ve heared a yelp/squeak now and then this evening. It must be so painful to change positions. Shoulders are injured. I can feel a heartbeat and breathing, so he didn't die of shock (so far). I think he can mend. Don't know if this little critter is a male or female, but for the sake of simplicity, it's a "he."
Took him out of his habitat a little bit ago, more moist, warm compresses with a microwaved washcloth. His whiskers started twitching, and while he seemed to wanna nibble on my finger (could this be hunger, I wondered) and he actually BIT me!
He drew blood, but not to worry~ I’m well-versed in dealing with such emergencies, and am perfectly safe. I honestly think he was letting me know, “this cuddling is great, but sleep is the best medicine!” Works wonders for us humans when we’re sick or injured too, ya know.
I’ll keep a close eye on this sweetie pie, and perhaps in a few days he’ll rebound, and live to frolic in the trees once again. My shoulders have been tight and sore lately, so I can relate somewhat, to his discomfort. He now has some birdseed and nuts in his cage, in case he gets hungry at some point, and I’m sure it beats a human finger!
Just another day in Paradise, folks. :~)
Let's hope your squirrel friend makes it through the night, Shari. 🐿️👍🙂
