Is yelling or screaming at someone a “bad thing?” I say, NO.
In my personal and clinical experience, far too many people grew up with emotional and/or physical abuse. This can make them impervious to soft or subtle verbal interactions. A loud and firm approach, no matter how uncomfortable it makes you, is all that’s likely to get the job done. If you hate confrontation or it terrifies ya, this article is not for You.
When I was a young woman, my dad once said: “Sometimes ya gotta hit a man between the eyes with a 2 × 4, JUST to get his attention.” Sadly, this is too often true~ though it’s not a gender-specific rule.
All vehicles are equipped with horns. We use our car horns to wake up sleepy or distracted drivers, or those too busy texting to notice the traffic light in front of ‘em has turned to green. I usually give it just a light tap~ but it’s dependent on my mood.
We also use our horn to WARN someone whose car is getting too close to ours, or backing out of a driveway into oncoming traffic (us!), or a menacing looking character heading straight for us, looking for trouble. In short, horns are an essential element in motor vehicles (ever try driving without one?). They save us from traffic accidents, and actually save lives!
Our ability and willingness to holler at someone when it’s necessary to be heard or to get our point across, is a normally occurring fact of life. If you’re always soft-spoken, you’re likely afraid of your anger, and oughta get professional help to undo that.
A client related a recent experience of having to yell at people delivering a large object to his home. They fucked up TWICE. He called the company from which he purchased this item, and gave THEM a big, frustration-filled chunk of his mind, too (including some very colorful language)! I suspect they’ll wanna give him a discount on his purchase, to compensate for the sizable inconvenience this has caused him. Good-will gestures have a way of mending business ruptures.
The way I see it, he did this company a favor. If you make a great product, but your delivery company screws up on getting it to your customers in a timely, intact fashion, doesn’t this reflect poorly on your company? Of course it does! In fact, it can DESTROY any business you’ve worked hard to build!
So, within the realm of trying to ensure that life flows as it supposed to, horns and hollering are absolutely essential. If ya don’t think so, that’s Your problem.
