To feel, or NOT to feel: A disconcerting, yet essential human choice.
I have worked with clients (some successfully) who were so dissociated from their emotions, they couldn't even experience or distinguish PHYSICAL sensations in their body.
For these people, instinct and intuition died when they were very young, due to shutting down/killing off feelings in the body that were too dangerous or painful to allow.
When we determine not to feel 'certain' emotions, ALL emotions sensations and feelings (plus extra-sensory ones) lose their vibrancy, and we become empty shells~ or vessels of protoplasm that have only a fraction of the capacity a fully functional, self-actualized human being has.
All these clients had personality disorder traits, due to emotional dissociation and developmental arrest, which inevitably resulted from the time they were very young.
You cannot do feeling work effectively, with someone who is so completely divorced from their bodily sensations, they have no sense of what an EMOTION actually is. Thankfully, MY intuition and instincts aided me in determining how to START working effectively with these folks, which led to significant healing and growth for them.
Dissociative disordered clients cannot benefit from standard, psychotherapeutic approaches. If they COULD, this world of ours would be a VERY different and much better place to inhabit.
