To really KNOW Thyself, means you'll never be bored a day in your life!
And it takes a lifetime.
There’s a human nature phenomenon that’s pretty common, so I’m gonna share it with you. Folks tend to vilify, hate and scapegoat others for their OWN unrecognized shortcomings, flaws or unwholesome behaviors.
This happens a lot among people with Borderline Personality Disorder traits. It’s called ‘projection.’
When we fail to recognize and accept our own darker personality aspects, we project them onto others, as if they are the movie screen upon which we are able to readily view whatever personality dimensions we have refused to accept within ourselves. It is said, that what we can’t tolerate in another, is often what we’ve failed to recognize in our Self. If you have the courage to look deeply enough within, you might discover how you and that ‘annoying’ other, have common, unsavory traits.
Lots of people cheat on their spouses, either emotionally or physically… so when a candidate running for office can be accused of this type of behavior (whether true or not) folks tend to wave and run with that banner as a good excuse to vilify him or her. This takes the focus off their own highly-judged, socially unacceptable actions. When we detest another for their failings, it tends to magically lets us off the hook for ours.
Add to this, most people grew up in families that struggled financially. Parents who cannot provide abundantly for their children, often feel resentful of anyone who can! Subtle messages are given to children that imply “rich people” are bad, selfish, un-empathic assholes!
This subtle yet consistent programming of one’s kids is spawned by nothing more than sour grapes. If envy and jealousy is felt by lower to middle class families, it’s easier to make The Wealthy into “monsters”, rather than feeling (by contrast) inadequate.
I’m sure there are many who’ve hated Donald Trump, simply because he achieved great success and wealth. Resentment, distrust and hatred of the wealthy tend to be handed down generationally~ there’s a ‘Victim energy’ that seems to cling to folks who’ve not yet gotten their ship in the water… but there’s real FEAR surrounding the prospect of it, too!
Don’t believe me?? I have worked with hundreds of clients over the past 30 years who were literally AFRAID of becoming financially very successful. Why?? They believed that monetary riches would dramatically alter their sense of character and integrity, and they’d no longer be able to regard themselves as “good people.”
This is absurd of course, because WHO we are today as adults, is who we were by the time we turned 5 years old. This is why the first five years of life are called THE FORMATIVE YEARS. Our basic nature, is chiseled in stone by this age!
If we had a sense of right and wrong when we were small, we don’t lose that as we age. If we developed integrity and character as we aged, none of that goes away. If we make more money than we’ve ever dreamed possible, it cannot fundamentally change us! If someone wins the lottery, and seems like a jerk~ rest assured, they were a jerk when they were poor!
It’s like they say about alcoholics~ if an alcoholic is an asshole when they were drinking, there’s a damned slim chance that getting and staying sober’s gonna fundamentally change their personality for the better.
Great Wealth doesn’t change WHO someone is~ yet underdeveloped souls lack the ability for reason and circumspection, and can’t consider it being any other way.
Thank you, Shari! I have found much of everything you mentioned to be true observing people's behaviors. Like the saying concerning leopards not changing their spots, they just rearrange them!
